At iWeb Solutions, we have been accepting students and graduates on placements for a number of years. This has not only benefited graduates but been fundamental to our continuing success and development.
We view each placement as giving candidates the opportunity to impress and potentially join our Web Development & Design team as a full time member. If a business does not see it this way then they are usually wasting their time. We don’t want people in the kitchen making teas and coffees – we want people who will jump at the chance to show us what they can do.
Part of the success of our graduate placements is that it allows us to train staff from the ground up in our development practices and software tools. However, we also appreciate the importance of allowing students to apply their unique knowledge and insights. Combining the two has developed our company in areas we had not previously considered.
Graduate placements also let us understand the disciplines and modules currently being learnt at universities, as well as giving us an overall view of the graduate market. From this, we can provide feedback to course leaders on skills being taught and areas in which students may need extra assistance or benefit from changes.
This close relationship has been mutually beneficial for our company, universities and their students. It has also helped us to forge strong links with local universities. For example, we have been accepting students from Staffordshire University for a number of years and have found each candidate to be bright and intelligent.
Andrew Frost, a graduate member from Staffordshire University, is currently working with our team: “My placement year at iWeb has been extraordinary. I’ve learnt so much in just a year. Not only have I developed new skills, but I have learned more about the real world application of my existing skills.”
This is one of the most important aspects of graduate placements and internships: giving students the opportunity to apply their skills in an environment where results matter and where they will be challenged. It is the only way they will improve and be given the best chance of future success in their career.
Team members at iWeb Solutions have also benefited from the scheme through their roles as mentors. This has aided their development and given students a point of contact should they have any questions or problems. It is important to have this contact to ensure a smooth process for both parties.
One of the other key aspects of graduate placements is helping young people to discover if this is the career for them. These are people who are still at a tender age and it can be difficult for them to have a concrete idea of where they want to be in 5 or 10 years.
By giving interns the opportunity to work in different areas and within a team environment, we give them vital insights into how their skills will be used in the real world and give them a better idea about their future career choices.
Graduate placements have been a mainstay of iWeb Solutions for many years and we see it as being an essential element if we are to continue helping our clients. That is why we have decided to offer two year-long internships for a Web Developer and a Web Designer in our Stafford office. These paid placements will begin summer 2014 and candidates can visit the job section on our site if they are interested in applying.
Nick Pinson, Managing Director at iWeb Solutions, comments: “We see this as an opportunity to help us attract and retain the next generation of bright minds in web development, improving skills and supporting people with the passion to grow and develop.”
And that’s what we see as being key: giving people the opportunity to improve their skills to help them secure jobs, and students having the passion and drive to make the most of these opportunities.
